How to Prepare for Your Massage Appointment (So You Get the Most Out of It)

Whether it’s your first massage or your fiftieth, it’s totally normal to wonder what you should (or shouldn’t) do before your appointment.

The good news? Preparing for your massage doesn’t take much—but the few simple steps you do take can make a big difference in how comfortable and effective your session is.

So if you’re booked in for some well-deserved self-care, here’s everything you need to know to feel totally prepared.

💧 1. Stay Hydrated (But Not Too Much!)

Drink some water in the hours leading up to your massage to help keep your muscles hydrated and your body relaxed.

But skip the giant bottle of water right before you arrive—you don’t want to interrupt your relaxation with a mid-massage bathroom break. 😉

🍽️ 2. Eat Light Before Your Appointment

Try to have a light meal or snack about 1–2 hours before your session. Arriving hungry can make you feel lightheaded, but a big, heavy meal can leave you feeling sluggish or bloated when lying on the table.

Something like a smoothie, toast, fruit, or yogurt works great.

👚 3. Wear Comfortable Clothing

Choose something loose and comfy that’s easy to change in and out of. You’ll undress to your comfort level once in the treatment room, but cozy clothes make it easier to transition in and out of relaxation mode.

Bonus: Leave jewelry at home if possible—it’s one less thing to keep track of!

🕰️ 4. Arrive a Few Minutes Early

Rushing into your appointment feeling frazzled kind of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it?

Arriving 5–10 minutes early gives you time to:

  • Use the washroom

  • Fill out any forms

  • Chat with your therapist about your needs and goals

It also helps your body and mind start to relax before you even get on the table.

💬 5. Communicate With Your Therapist

This is your time, and your comfort is everything. Be open with your massage therapist about:

  • Any areas of pain or tension

  • Past injuries or health conditions

  • If you prefer a lighter or deeper pressure

  • If you’re nervous, new to massage, or have any questions

You’ll never be judged—just supported and cared for. We want you to feel totally at ease.

📵 6. Silence Your Phone

Take this hour for you. Turn your phone off or set it to Do Not Disturb so you’re not pulled out of the moment by buzzing notifications.

You deserve a little peace and quiet.

🧼 7. Consider a Quick Shower Beforehand

It’s not required, but a warm shower before your massage can help you:

  • Loosen up your muscles

  • Feel fresh and relaxed

  • Get into that spa-like mindset

It’s especially appreciated if you’re coming in after the gym, work, or a hot summer day!

😌 8. Take a Deep Breath and Relax

Once you’re on the table, let yourself fully unwind. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and let your body soften. Don’t worry about chatting (unless you want to!), how you look, or whether you snore (it happens a lot—we take it as a compliment!).

Bonus: Aftercare Matters Too

Once your massage is done, give yourself time to transition slowly back into your day. Drink water, avoid intense activity right away, and pay attention to how your body feels over the next 24 hours.

If you feel a little sore, that’s normal—especially after deep tissue work. A warm bath with epsom salts or gentle stretching can help.

Whether you’re coming in for pain relief, stress release, or just some well-earned quiet time, preparing for your massage helps make your experience smoother and more effective.
